This is an Oribe matcha tea bowl from Seto ware, bearing the signature “Gikōsuke,” and accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako).
The soft white slip surface is boldly accented with the characteristic green Oribe glaze, creating an expressive flowing effect. Natural glaze pooling can also be seen inside the bowl, showcasing the rich and varied results of the firing process.
The exterior is decorated with a striking tortoiseshell (hexagonal) pattern, achieving a harmonious balance between rustic simplicity and decorative design. The slightly irregular form reflects the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, making it well suited for use in the tea ceremony.
The signature can be found inside the foot, and a corresponding inscription is also present on the lid of the tomobako.
Origin: Japan (Seto ware)
Material: Ceramic
Dimensions:
Diameter: approx. 11.6 cm
Height: approx. 6.8 cm
Condition:
There are minor signs of age and use, including slight surface wear and natural kiln effects such as glaze irregularities, pinholes, and firing marks. These are considered inherent characteristics of the piece. There are no major damages such as cracks or chips, and the overall condition is good.
This piece can be enjoyed both as a functional tea utensil and as a collectible item.
