A charming American Art Deco banker’s desk lamp, manufactured by Atlas Appliance Corp., Brooklyn, New York, circa 1930s. The lamp is made from marbled dark brown Bakelite, with a rounded barrel-shaped shade held between two metal supports. The base is designed as a small desktop organiser, with shaped trays for small desk necessities and a pen holder. The form is very decorative. The curved shade with the moulded ridges, stepped edges and small integrated compartments give the lamp an Art Deco rhythm. It is not the usual green-glass banker’s lamp, but a more unusual American desk object: part lamp, part writing-table accessory. The lamp is marked underneath: “Manufactured by Atlas Appliance Corp. Brooklyn N.Y.” Similar marked examples by Atlas Appliance Corp. are generally dated to the 1920s–40s and are often described as Bakelite desk, office or banker’s lamps. An extra cavity at the back was most probably caused by a former owner in order to tuck the wire away neatly. It is veru handy but the lamp does have this small damage. Has been rewired, no switch but just wire and plug. It works well. A nice accent piece for a desk, library and also appealing for collectors of American Art Deco and early Bakelite design. Condition Good antique condition. Extra cavity at the back which is handy but is not original. The Bakelite has a warm marbled colour. Some wear, small marks and age-related surface signs are present, as visible in the photographs. The lamp has newer wiring and works well.
