Ancient stone statue from Bongo tribe, South Sudan. Dimensions: height: 29 cm; width: 12 cm; depth: 16 cm. Weight: 6 kilos. Type of stone: volcanic stone (basalt conglomerate). Estimated age: possibly 600 AD. Provenance and history of the piece: collected on 1958 in Abushaka, Sudan, Bahr El Ghazal province, South Sudan, Western Bahr El Ghazal province, by comboni father Elvio Gostoli. Acquired with a bunch of funerary posts from South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo and a group of Bongo stones from father Elvio Gostoli on 2010. Overall condition: the statue shows deep signs of erosion, but it is in good condition and looks amazing. Few of this type of stone statues have been catalogued in western museums, one of the most famous examples is located at the National Museum of African Art in Washington DC. This piece comes from the archaeological area of Abushaka, 80 kilometres west of Wau, South Sudan.
