Antique Ngombe / Poto 'Mopamba' Ceremonial Sword - Congo - Early 20th Century
An impressive and authentic 'Mopamba' (or Ingonda) ceremonial sword from the Ngombe or Poto people of the northern Democratic Republic of Congo. This striking object dates to the early 20th century and was used as a status symbol by elite men during important tribal ceremonies. The sword is famous for its "two-piece" architectural blade design. The lower section is reinforced with hand-hammered brass plates, while the upper section flares out into a distinct leaf-shaped point. The wooden hilt is meticulously finished with tightly wound copper wire.
Material: Forged iron, carved hardwood, and decorative copper wire and brass plating.
Condition: In good original condition with a rich, dark patina. Note: There are some old traces of adhesive (wax or resin) on the brass plating, likely used to secure the decorative elements over time. The copper wire wrapping on the hilt is well-preserved.
Style: Traditional Ngombe / Poto tribal art.
Provenance: From a private family collection; in possession since the late 1960s.
Dimensions: Total length: 64 cm (Blade: 46 cm / Hilt: 18 cm).
