A Tlatilco Terracotta Anthropomorphic Head, Central Mexico, 12th to 6th Century BC. Small and expressive hand-modelled terracotta head with broad face, prominent nose, defined eyes and mouth, and a relatively flat profile. The piece shows characteristic Preclassic modelling with subtle incised details and an attractive reddish-beige to greyish patina with natural mineral encrustation. This type of small head is typical of the Tlatilco culture and was commonly used as an amulet, votive offering or component of larger figurines during the Preclassic period in the Valley of Mexico.
