單花花瓶 - 石器 - 日本 - 笔触粉引花 - 濱田庄司 (1894-1978)

A rare and deeply personal work by Hamada Shoji, one of the most celebrated ceramic artists of the twentieth century and a designated Living National Treasure of Japan. This cylindrical kohiki flower vase features bold, gestural brushwork in iron oxide over a pale ash glaze — a composition that captures Hamada's mastery of spontaneous mark-making. Vertical combed lines (kushime) articulate the form, lending quiet rhythm to the surface. The restrained palette of grey, white and warm brown reflects the wabi aesthetic that defined Hamada's vision throughout his career. What makes this piece particularly significant is its provenance. The original signed wooden box bears the inscription "Kohiki Kushime Flower Vase – Kimio" (刷毛目花生 君生), confirming this was created as a personal gift for his son, Kimio — the childhood name of Hamada Shinsaku, who himself became a distinguished Mashiko potter. Objects made as personal gifts within the Hamada family are exceptionally rare on the open market. Works by Hamada Shoji are no longer in production. This is a finite body of work. Condition Excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs. Please note that as a vintage work, minor age-related marks consistent with its history may be present. We encourage buyers to examine all photographs carefully. Artist Profile Hamada Shoji (1894–1978) is one of the defining figures of twentieth-century Japanese ceramics. A co-founder of the mingei (folk craft) movement alongside Bernard Leach and Yanagi Soetsu, Hamada dedicated his life to elevating everyday craft to the level of fine art. He established his kiln in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, where he worked with local clay and natural ash glazes, producing works of extraordinary directness and vitality. In 1955, Hamada was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government for his contribution to Mashiko ware. His works are held in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. His son, Hamada Shinsaku (childhood name: Kimio), continued the Mashiko tradition and is himself a highly regarded ceramic artist. This vase, gifted to Kimio, represents a rare and intimate connection between father and son within one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic dynasties.
