A white ceramic bowl from the Vung Tau shipwreck. The bowl is circular in shape and sits on a short, sturdy ring foot from which its convex walls rise to meet a wide mouth. The everted rim is adorned with a band of dark pigment, most of which is now dulled or lost due to age and seawater exposure. The bowl has minor deposits and encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with its age, such as some discolouration, indentations to the body, and chips to the rim. Long, stable hairline crack running down the body from the rim on one side. Stickers relating to the shipwreck auction are visible to the exterior.
The Vung Tau shipwreck, named after the nearby town, was a wreck of a lorcha boat and was found by fishermen in 1990, after they trawled up nets full of ceramics. Dated to around 1690, the ship was determined to have been travelling from China to Jakarta, Indonesia when it was wrecked. The porcelain, had it reached its final destination, would have been purchased by the Dutch East India Company.
Measurements: (circa) W 14.7cm x H 7.2cm
Provenance: From the 17th Century AD Vung Tau shipwreck, discovered in 1990.
