This is a gold and silver raised lacquer inkstone box believed to date from the mid-Edo period.
The front features a delicate depiction of a boat on the shore, strange mountains, and buildings built on waves, rendered in gold, silver, and copper lacquer and kirikane (cut gold leaf).
Across the ample negative space, the upper section contrasts sharply with a hazy moon and a flock of migrating birds, creating a poetic scene.
In contrast, the inside of the inkstone box and the underside of the lid are adorned with delicate autumn grasses and butterflies in raised lacquer on a finely sprinkled gold nashiji (pear-skin) background, rendered with refined elegance.
Unlike the overtly showy works of the late Meiji period, a refined restraint permeates the entire piece. The contrast between the spacious raised lacquer on the outside and the dense nashiji on the inside evokes the Edo period's refined taste, perhaps reflecting the concept of "reverse superiority."
This piece truly embodies the refined taste of the upper class of that era.
