Charming large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) covered with a series of six separate hanging scroll paintings 掛け軸 (kakejiku) depicting pairings of birds, plants and calligraphy (right to left):
1 & 2) a poem titled ‘plum blossom’ 梅 (ume), with on the panel next to it a painting of a green parrot perched in a blooming red and white plum tree being accompanied by two more birds, a small blue-white one and a red-black one.
3 & 4) this poem is titled ‘tree peony’ 牡丹 (botan), paired with a painting of a tall rock covered by peonies in pink, red and white. Above flutter different types of butterfly and at the base sits a small blue bird.
5 & 6) and the last poem is titled ‘Pine tree’ 松 (matsu), matched with a painting of a hoopoe 戴勝 (yatsugashira) perched in a pine tree along a meandering river. On the background a kingfisher 川蝉 (kawasemi) and a Japanese tit 四十雀 (shijûkara) are perched in a blooming plum tree 梅 (ume).
The panels with calligraphy are sealed by the artists. The polychrome paintings are executed in the same style on a paper ground, mounted with a border of gold leaf speckled paper, surrounded by two more silk borders. The panels are protected by a black lacquer wooden frame.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).

Total width: 369.2 cm (2 x 62.4 cm and 4 x 61.1 cm); Height: 175.7 cm.
It is in a good condition with traces of age and wear, like some paint/paper loss, wear of the silk borders, and some wear of the paper back. The first panel on the right with a small hole (1.5 cm). Please look at the photos for a clear impression of its condition.
The room divider is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
