This copper figure of Mahavairocana Buddha, from a private collection, measures 15 cm in height, 10 cm in length, and 7.3 cm in width. In excellent condition, it is from a private devotional collection. The Buddha is seated in full lotus posture upon a finely cast double-lotus pedestal. His hands form the Bodhyagri Mudra (the “Fist of Wisdom” or “Gesture of Supreme Enlightenment”), the definitive iconographic attribute of Mahavairocana in Esoteric Buddhism, symbolizing the illumination of all realms and the realization of absolute truth.
The head is characterized by neatly coiled hair (ushnisha) and a prominent cranial protuberance. The face is broad and full, with elongated earlobes and a clearly defined urna on the forehead. The eyes are downcast and slightly open, the nose is straight and well-defined, and the lips are full, curving into a subtle, compassionate smile. The overall expression radiates serene compassion, perfect composure, and supreme enlightenment. The Buddha wears a monastic robe covering both shoulders; its folds are rendered with flowing, naturalistic lines that drape the body closely, forming elegant, rhythmic curves across the chest and knees, with an intricately pierced and finely chased flaming mandorla serving as the resplendent backdrop.
The copper is of fine, dense quality, its entire surface polished to a smooth, lustrous finish and covered in a deep, warm chestnut-brown patina. Traces of the original fire-gilding remain discernible in areas. The figure demonstrates masterful casting, harmonious proportions, and an aura of profound stillness and grandeur. It stands as a quintessential example of Ming-dynasty Chinese Buddhist metalwork, holding value as an object of religious reverence, a work of high artistic merit, and a prized collectible. It is held in a private collection.
