铁黑釉清酒杯,饰以阿拉伯花纹浮雕 - 陶瓷 - 小野寺玄 Onodera Gen(1930-2016) - 日本 - 昭和年代(1926-1989)

Item Description: 小野寺玄 Onodera Gen(1930-2016) A bold and expressive sake cup (guinomi) by Onodera Gen, one of Japan's most distinctive ceramic artists, celebrated for his mastery of carbonized firing (tankazaki) and neriage (marbled clay) techniques. This piece exemplifies the artist's deeply personal vocabulary — a dark, lustrous iron-black glaze covers the surface, while swirling cloud-like arabesque relief carving (ukabori) animates the entire exterior with sculptural vitality. The form is robust and satisfying in hand, slightly tapering toward the base which is faceted into an octagonal foot. The interior is coated in a deep, mirror-like black glaze. The contrast between the matte and glossy surfaces of the glaze creates a rich visual texture reminiscent of the coal-black mountains of Kushiro, Hokkaido, where the artist was born — a landscape he himself described as the origin of his black-and-white visual world. A hand-written ink signature mark is visible on the unglazed foot. Size Height: 5 cm Width: 5.5 cm Depth: 5.5 cm Weight: 61 g Condition In good condition overall with no chips or cracks; minor age-related marks may be present consistent with a pre-owned work. Artist Profile 小野寺玄 Onodera Gen(1930-2016) Onodera Gen (1930–2016) was a pioneering Japanese ceramic artist born in Kushiro, Hokkaido. After studying at the Bunka Gakuin School of Arts in Tokyo — where he simultaneously served as assistant in the ceramics research studio — he went on to study under the legendary master Rosanjin Kitaoji, honing his technical and aesthetic foundations. In 1962, he established his own kiln, Choonkama (Tide Sound Kiln), in Oiso, Kanagawa. A turning point came in 1972, when he encountered the ancient Suzu kilns of the Noto Peninsula, igniting a lifelong devotion to carbonized firing (tankazaki) — a technique that produces dramatic gradations of black, grey and white. He became the foremost practitioner of this method in Japan, successfully firing white from the naturally grey-black Suzu clay. His achievements were widely recognised: he received the Minister of Education Award at the 4th Japan Ceramics Exhibition (1977) and the Grand Prize (Chichibu-no-miya Cup) at the 7th Japan Ceramics Exhibition (1983), along with the Japan Ceramics Society Prize. In 2008, a work was purchased by the Imperial Household Agency; in 2014, his work was presented to US President Obama by the Emperor of Japan. His pieces are held in major collections including the British Museum, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art, and the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art.
