This set features the most significant and beloved subjects of Eastern Orthodox "traveling" icons: The Baptism of Christ (The Epiphany): Depicts Jesus Christ standing in the River Jordan, with John the Baptist to His right. The composition is crowned by the "Mandylion" (The Savior Not Made by Hands) on the top piece (oglavie), which is considered the first icon in Christian tradition, sent by Christ to King Abgar. Saint George the Victorious: A classic representation of the "Miracle of the Dragon." Saint George, on horseback, pierces the dragon with a spear, symbolizing the triumph of faith over evil. This image was particularly popular among soldiers and travelers as a symbol of protection. The Deesis (The Intercession): Items 3 and 4 represent the Deesis ("prayer" or "intercession"). This is the central theme of Orthodox iconography, where Christ Pantocrator (the Almighty) is flanked by John the Baptist and the Mother of God (interceding for humanity). The presence of deep blue enamel is a characteristic feature of high-end bronze casting from Old Believer workshops, where blue symbolized the purity of the heavenly realm. Historical Context & Provenance: The folding icons in this set are presented as individual or double wings. In Russian tradition, these "travel icons" (putevye ikony) were deeply personal objects. There was a poignant custom: when a family member was separated for a long time—such as a son being sent for military service (which in the 19th century could last up to 25 years)—a wing would be broken off from the family folding icon. The traveler would take one part as a blessing and protection for their journey, while the other remained at home as a symbolic bond and a promise of their eventual return. These pieces are not just religious artifacts; they are silent witnesses to the personal histories and emotional partings of the 19th-century Russian Empire. All items are in original condition with traces of long-term use and natural aging, without any modern interventions or restorations.
