Ancient Egyptian Predynastic Flint Spearhead
Circa 4000–3000 B.C.
A well-crafted Predynastic Egyptian flint spearhead, knapped from fine-quality brown flint with an attractive natural patina.
The piece is triangular in form with a broad base and tapering point, shaped through careful bifacial flaking. Both faces display clear percussion scars and subtle ripple marks, indicative of skilled workmanship. The edges are finely retouched and remain sharp in places, reflecting its original function as a hunting or combat implement.
The surface exhibits a smooth, slightly glossy patina with scattered mineral inclusions and minor natural pitting, consistent with age and burial conditions. The overall symmetry and execution are characteristic of Predynastic lithic technology during the Naqada period, prior to the widespread adoption of metal tools.
Such spearheads were essential components of early hunting equipment and represent an important stage in the technological development of ancient Egyptian society.
Length 4.9 cm
Provenance: found in Egypt in 1930s.
Ex Swedish Egyptologist collection, 1990s.
Later in European collections.
