Bamboo coral is a real coral. It is a member of the Cnidaria phylum, which also includes brain coral and staghorn coral. Red and pink corals produce a calcite skeleton similar in hardness to ivory and pearls. Bamboo coral (Isididae family) and red coral (typically Corallium rubrum) differ significantly in colour and rarity. Red coral is a deep-red precious material from the Mediterranean, while bamboo coral is naturally white/gray, dyed red, and used as a more abundant, affordable alternative.
