Carl Deffner attributed Jugendstil copper tray with maiden masks – Germany, circa 1900–1910
An exceptional German Jugendstil / Art Nouveau copper tray, most likely produced by the renowned metalware manufacturer Carl Deffner of Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, circa 1900–1910. The tray displays a highly characteristic flowing Art Nouveau design with elegant whiplash lines, stylized floral motifs, and striking female maiden masks integrated into the pierced side handles.
The organically shaped body is richly embossed and executed in warm reddish copper, featuring four lobed compartments framed by delicate floral tendrils and symmetrical decorative detailing. The distinctive openwork “three-hole” handles and the sculptural female faces strongly resemble documented Carl Deffner Jugendstil tableware designs from the early 20th century.
Although unmarked, the design language and craftsmanship are highly consistent with Deffner production from this period, a manufacturer celebrated for high-quality Jugendstil metalwork that rivaled WMF during the German Art Nouveau movement.
Condition:
In good antique condition with an attractive aged patina and minor signs of use and age consistent with over 100 years of history. Unrestored and fully original. No cracks or repairs. See photo's.
