Pre-Columbian Chancay Textile Fragment with Trophy Head Figure and Birds - Peru
A striking and highly decorative Pre-Columbian textile fragment attributed to the Chancay culture of the Central Coast of Peru. Executed in cotton with polychrome embroidery in warm tones of red, ochre, and dark brown on a light ground.
The composition features stylized anthropomorphic figures, birds, and abstract motifs.
The lower section is dominated by a trophy head bearer with elaborate snakes headdress, holding a severed head—an important symbol in Andean ritual culture associated with power, warfare, and fertility.
Surrounding figures and avian elements create a lively and almost narrative scene, typical of Chancay textile design.
Condition: age-related wear, losses, and small holes, as expected.
The textile remains stable and displays very well, with strong surviving colors and clear motifs.
Modern textile backing for support, ready for framing.
From the wrappings of a mummy bundle.
Time period: Ca. 1000 - 1200 AD
Dimensions: 25 x 15 cm
