Val Saint Lambert “Lupin” Vase – Overlay Crystal, Hand-Cut Art Deco Design, Belgium, 1940s A striking late Art Deco crystal vase by Val Saint Lambert, Belgium, known as the “Lupin” model. This sculptural design perfectly reflects the bold geometry and refined craftsmanship that defined Val Saint Lambert production during the 1940s. Executed in richly contrasting two-tone overlay crystal, the vase combines deep ruby overlay with clear crystal, entirely hand-cut to reveal dramatic optical effects and exceptional depth. The rhythmic twisted vertical cuts and sharply faceted star motifs create a constantly changing play of light, giving the piece a highly architectural and almost modernist appearance. The “Lupin” model was produced in several cutting variations, and this example represents one of the more distinctive interpretations of the design. Comparable versions are documented in original Val Saint Lambert catalogues from the period, confirming the authenticity and historical relevance of the model. The vase is also signed by the manufactory. Entirely handmade and hand-finished, the piece demonstrates the remarkable technical mastery for which Val Saint Lambert became internationally renowned. The combination of heavy crystal, geometric carving, and dark overlay creates an elegant contrast typical of high-quality Belgian crystal from the late Art Deco era. Height: approx. 16.5 cm Diameter: approx. 12 cm Condition is generally very good for its age. There are a few extremely small and barely visible flea bites on some of the sharp facet peaks, visible only upon close inspection and entirely acceptable for a hand-cut crystal vase of this period. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Will be well packaged, protected and insured
