【Product details】
A fine Japanese lacquer suzuribako (writing box) dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period (19th century), decorated with elegant gold maki-e peony scrolls and nashiji ground.
The exterior features luxurious gold maki-e peonies, a traditional symbol of wealth, honor, and prosperity in Japanese art. Some of the petals are subtly accented with nashiji, creating delicate texture and depth.
The interior contrasts beautifully with a full nashiji ground, decorated with charming chidori (plovers) in maki-e. In Japanese symbolism, plovers represent perseverance, endurance, and good fortune, often depicted flying against waves.
The set includes an inkstone (suzuri) and a brass water dropper (suiteki). Two removable trays are fitted inside, forming a complete traditional calligraphy writing set.
Maki-e is a classic Japanese lacquer technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create refined decorative designs.
Nashiji uses fine metallic flakes within lacquer to produce a pear-skin-like shimmering surface.
This is a high-quality example of traditional Japanese lacquer craftsmanship combining both artistic beauty and practical use.
Age-related wear consistent with use, including scuffs, scratches, discoloration, a crack and small chips on the suzuribako corner, a few small dents on the lid, and verdigris patina on the brass water dropper. The wooden storage box shows age-related heavy wear including cracks, warping, small losses, wormholes, and surface wear. Please refer to the photos for details.
