De munt is afkomstig uit het beroemde scheepswrak van de Vliegenthart, een spiegelretourschip van de VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) dat in januari 1735 vlak na vertrek voor de Zeeuwse kust zonk met een grote lading goud en zilver aan boord.
