石 - 一尊距今已有160年的地藏菩萨像,铭文为“Genji 2 元治二年” - 江戶時代(1600-1868)

This is an antique stone statue of Jizo Bodhisattva (Ojizo-san お地蔵さん) believed to date from the late Edo period. The statue depicts Jizo standing upright peacefully with hands pressed together in prayer. The carving retains a gentle and solemn facial expression, and details such as the lips, robe, and head covering are still clearly visible despite its age. The surface has developed a beautiful natural weathered texture over many decades, creating a deeply spiritual and historical atmosphere. On the left side, the inscription “元治二年” (Genji 2) can be confirmed, while the right side appears to read “二月四日” (February 4th). Genji 2 corresponds to the year 1865, placing this piece at approximately 160 years old. 1865 was during the final turbulent years of the Edo period, shortly before the Meiji Restoration. Objects from this historical transition period possess a unique presence and cultural significance. Jizo Bodhisattva is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese Buddhism and is worshipped as a protector of children, travelers, and departed souls. Throughout Japan, Jizo statues were traditionally placed along roadsides, temples, cemeteries, and village entrances to watch over people and guide them safely. Unlike bronze or wooden Buddhist statues, authentic old stone Jizo sculptures were usually rooted permanently in local communities and rarely entered the art market. As modernization progressed in Japan, many roadside Jizo statues disappeared, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to obtain today. The sculpture has a quiet yet powerful presence and would make an exceptional display piece for collectors of Japanese antiques, Buddhist art, or wabi-sabi interiors. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description. Authentic Edo-period stone Jizo statues with clearly remaining inscriptions and expressive carving are becoming increasingly scarce. With its confirmed historical date, serene expression, and strong spiritual atmosphere, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of Japanese Buddhist history that has survived for more than a century and a half. Height 36.4 cm Width 26.3 cm Depth 18.8 cm Weight: 14.52 kg Condition: The condition is generally good. There is some discoloration, scratches, and dirt on the stone. Please take a look at the many photos we have posted. Atention: The items listed for sale are all used collectibles. Please consider them to have signs of aging, such as stains, scratches, scuffs, tears, discoloration, fading, fraying, and changes in thread color. We will post as many photos as possible to make it easy to understand. As these are old items, we appreciate your understanding before making a purchase. Shipping: The lot will be carefully packaged and shipped from Japan. We will use either DHL,FedEx or JapanPost for a safe and secure transportation.
