Jama-Coaque Standing Figure – Jama-Coaque Culture – 3rd BC to 2nd Century AD
A finely carved anthropomorphic figure from the Jama-Coaque culture of ancient Ecuador. The sculpture depicts a standing individual rendered in the distinctive stylized manner characteristic of this highly artistic coastal civilization. The elongated facial features, prominent nose, and simplified anatomical treatment reflect the symbolic and ceremonial nature of Jama-Coaque figural art. Despite its compact size, the piece possesses a strong sculptural presence and demonstrates the refined aesthetic traditions developed by the culture over many centuries.
The figure is carved in a compact upright form with the arms positioned alongside the body and subtle details indicating attire or ritual adornment. The surface displays an attractive archaeological texture with natural mineral deposits and age-related wear that enhance its authenticity and visual appeal. Small anthropomorphic representations such as this are closely associated with ritual, social identity, and ancestor veneration within Jama-Coaque society.
