A very large and refined Arita porcelain vase by Fujii Shûmei 藤井朱明 (1936–2017). The gently rounded cylindrical body is decorated with a continuous underglaze blue landscape depicting layers of forested mountain ranges emerging through drifting mist. Dense pine forests in deep cobalt blue occupy the foreground, while increasingly distant hills gradually dissolve into softer tones, creating a remarkable sense of depth and atmosphere. A particularly striking feature is the depiction of falling snow, rendered as countless small raised white dots in relief across the entire surface Executed in a wide range of blue tones, the composition demonstrates Shûmei’s exceptional mastery of porcelain painting, combining delicate gradations with an almost painterly treatment of landscape and light. Signed to the underside ‘Shûmei’ 朱明. Complete with the original inscribed, signed, and sealed wooden plaque “Made by Shumei, ceramic artist and Friend of the Nitten Exhibition.” 陶芸日展会友朱明作, as well as accompanying Japanese leaflets relating to the artist and his kiln. Fujii Shûmei 藤井朱明 (1936–2017) was a distinguished porcelain artist from Arita, Saga Prefecture. While best known for his mastery of overglaze enamel decoration (akae 赤絵), he also produced a number of highly accomplished landscape compositions in underglaze blue. His works are celebrated for their technical precision, refined sense of colour, and ability to create depth and atmosphere on porcelain surfaces. Recognised as a leading figure in modern Arita ceramics, he was designated a Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Saga Prefecture.
