Septarias are authigenic carbonate nodules cracked during diagenesis, creating free space that is subsequently filled with low temperature hydrothermal minerals (quartz, calcite, celestine, baryte, strontianite, whewellite...). Beautiful collectable septarias are however uncommon at the global scale. The Jurassic to Cretaceous marls of the Baronnies massif in the Provence foreland of the Alps are famous in France and among connoisseurs of alpine minerals for hosting a large number of septaria localities, where beautiful 'diamond'-like quartz and other species occur.
