A fine antique meerschaum tobacco pipe featuring a highly detailed hand-carved bowl in the form of a turbaned, bearded man — a classic Orientalist figural subject highly sought after during the 19th century. The face displays expressive carved detail including a full flowing beard, moustache, and layered turban with feather plume. The bowl shows natural amber and honey toning to the beard and turban areas, indicative of genuine block meerschaum that has developed a rich patina through age and use.
The curved stem is original and made from ambroid (pressed amber), identifiable by its characteristic swirling bands of honey, amber and deep brown — a premium stem material used on quality pipes of this period. Minor wear and imperfections to the mouthpiece tip as shown in the photographs, consistent with honest age and use. No case.
Measurements: 12 x 7 x 3 cm | Weight: 26g
Material: Block meerschaum bowl, original ambroid stem
Period: Circa 1870–1900, late 19th century
Origin: Most likely Austria-Hungary or Turkey, the two principal centres of fine meerschaum pipe production of the era
Condition: Good antique condition — natural patina throughout, minor wear to stem tip, no cracks to the bowl
