Taíno Marble Idol – 10th to 15th Century AD
An exceptional Taíno very likely in marble idol carved in a highly stylized anthropomorphic form, featuring deeply recessed circular eyes, a prominent mouth, enlarged ear ornaments, and a compact body rendered according to the symbolic conventions of Taíno religious art. Such idols served as sacred representations of ancestral beings, spiritual entities, or powerful zemis that occupied a central role in Taíno ceremonial and ritual life throughout the Caribbean. The sculptor emphasized supernatural features rather than naturalistic proportions, creating a powerful visual presence that reflects the spiritual beliefs of the Late Pre-Columbian period. The piece displays an attractive smooth surface, fine carving details, and a well-preserved archaeological appearance, making it a striking example of Taíno lapidary craftsmanship and religious symbolism.
