Bronze Viking amulet pendant with an integral suspension loop. The body is shaped with rounded side projections and above the raised boss appears an engraved ᛟ symbol, which is the Runic 'Othala' sign. Its traditional meaning is usually connected to inheritance, ancestral property, homeland, family lineage and heritage.
Undecorated reverse side. Very rare amulet.
-> Othila (or Ōþala) s the 24th and final rune of the ancient Germanic Elder Futhark alphabet. It corresponds to the English letter O. In an early medieval or Viking Age context, the Runic Othala symbol could be understood as a sign linked to ancestry, inherited land, family identity, and continuity between generations. It also symbolises spiritual wealth like traditions, character traits, and wisdom passed down through generations.
On a pendant, it may have had a protective or amuletic meaning, especially if worn close to the body.
Length: ± 56,4 mm
Condition:
Good condition with surface wear, patination, encrustation, and softening to parts of the decoration. The suspension loop is restored, allowing this amulet to be worn or put on display. Minor surface irregularities and wear to the detailing.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Pendants of this type were worn during the Viking Age as personal ornaments and may also have served an amuletic function. Their compact form and suspension loop made them suitable for wearing on a cord or chain.
