Tea caddies of this type are used in the Japanese tea ceremony for storing powdered tea and are valued for the harmony between the ceramic vessel, lid, and textile pouch. The first example is a rounded tea caddy bearing the impressed seal of Kato Keizan (景山) on the base. It is finished in a deep black-brown glaze accented by a striking blue glaze flow near the shoulder. The accompanying blue silk shifuku is decorated with plum blossom motifs, a symbol of perseverance and renewal. The second example is a katatsuki (shoulder-form) tea caddy covered in a glossy black glaze with an attractive amber-coloured glaze cascade running down one side. It is accompanied by an elegant silk shifuku decorated with chrysanthemum motifs, traditionally associated with longevity and nobility. The third example is a shoulder-form tea caddy finished in a rich black glaze with a pale blue flowing glaze reminiscent of namako ware effects descending from the shoulder. Two fine horizontal lines encircle the lower body. The accompanying silk shifuku features roundel motifs. The vessels display a pleasing variety of traditional glazing techniques and forms, illustrating the refined aesthetic of Japanese tea utensils. Minor blemishes and signs of age and use are present. The lids show light dirt, rubbing, and slight discolouration. The silk shifuku pouches show minor wear from handling and storage. Overall, the set remains in good vintage condition.
