24. ACCA MS-61, 1824-1830 Edo Period New Nanshaku Nishu Silver Coin, Rare and Excellent Condition. During the Edo period in Japan, gold coins were used in Edo, while silver coins were used in Osaka. Merchants traveling between Edo and Osaka needed to exchange their respective currencies. Exchanging gold and silver coins incurred transaction fees, making trade between the two cities extremely inconvenient. Therefore, Tanuma Okiji, a proponent of proactive economic policies, promoted currency unification to control currency circulation. Thus, in 1772 (Meiwa 9), the Nanshaku Nishu Silver Coin was issued. This currency was called a gold coin made of silver, a so-called "nominal currency," with the inscription "Nanshaku eight pieces exchanged for one ryo." "Nanshaku" refers to "high-quality silver," and because it was a high-quality 98% pure silver coin, it was called "Nanshaku Nishu Silver Coin." This nominal currency later led to the "exodus of gold and silver." Because gold was worth three times more overseas than in Japan, foreigners repeatedly engaged in the practice of "bringing silver to Japan, exchanging it for Japanese gold, and then bringing the gold back to their own countries to exchange for silver again," profiting from this exchange. This resulted in a large amount of Japanese gold being taken overseas. This became known as the "gold coin outflow problem due to the gold-silver exchange rate." The quantity of Nanrai 2 Zhu silver coins is far less than that issued during the Tenpo and Ansei periods, making them extremely rare. They are also the first coins issued under the unified Japanese currency system, and collectors should not miss them.
