Kono Bairei (1844 –1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator, and art teacher. He was born (as Yasuda Bairei) and lived in Kyoto. He was a member of the broad Maruyama-Shijo school and was a master of kacho-ga painting in the Meiji period. In 1852, he went to study with the Maruyama-school painter, Nakajima Raisho (1796–1871). After Raisho's death, Bairei studied with the Shijo-school master Shiokawa Bunrin (1808–77). Bairei's notable "Album of One Hundred Birds" was published in 1881. He was instrumental in the founding of the Kyoto Prefecture Painting School (Kyoto-fu Ga-gakko) in 1880. In 1886, Bairei worked alongside Kubota Beisen, whose contribution begins the scroll, on ceiling panels for the Empress' dressing room in the Imperial Palace. The two also worked together towards the establishment of the Kyoto Young Painters' Study Group (Kyoto Seinen Kaiga Kenkyukai) in 1886, and the Kyoto Art Association (Kyoto Bijutsu Kyokai) in 1890. Among his students were Takeuchi Seiho, Kawai Gyokudo and Uemura Shoen.
