1950s D.L.I. Flamingo "Flintless" Table Lighter – First Edition Electromatic Lighter – Dorset Light Industries, England
An exceptionally rare and highly collectible example of British post-war design innovation: the D.L.I. Flamingo Flintless Table Lighter, manufactured by Dorset Light Industries Ltd., England, during the early 1950s.
Unlike conventional lighters of its era, the Flamingo employed an ingenious battery-powered ignition system, eliminating the need for a flint wheel entirely. Marketed as a "Flintless Table Lighter," it represented the optimism and technological experimentation of the early Atomic Age, combining modern electrical engineering with elegant Bakelite styling.
This sought-after first-edition model features a beautifully sculptural spherical body in deep black Bakelite accented by a vivid orange band and contrasting ivory-coloured ignition wand. Its distinctive form embodies the streamlined aesthetic of early Mid-Century Modern industrial design and makes it equally appealing as a display object, design collectible, or tobacciana rarity.
Particularly desirable is the survival of the original presentation box and the scarce orange guarantee leaflet, both of which are rarely found accompanying these lighters today. The lighter retains its original internal electrical mechanism and battery compartment.
The operation is ingenious: the removable ivory-topped metal wand carries a wick which is saturated with lighter fluid from the internal reservoir. When withdrawn, the internal battery-powered mechanism creates an electrical spark that ignites the wick, effectively producing an electrically generated match.
These first edition examples of the D.L.I. Flamingo are increasingly difficult to find, especially complete with original packaging and documentation. The design is represented in museum collections and is regarded as an important example of early consumer electrical innovation.
Condition
The Bakelite body remains in very attractive condition with a deep glossy finish and strong colours. The original guarantee leaflet and textured presentation box are included.
The internal battery compartment is exceptionally clean and free from battery corrosion.
Please note that the lower section of the internal Bakelite battery holder is broken (clearly shown in the photographs). Despite this damage, the original components remain present and the lighter retains excellent display appeal. The box shows expected age-related wear and handling marks.
