A pair of Oosode（大袖）, the wide sleeves of a suit of Japanese Samurai armour (甲冑） This is a component known as the ‘Oosode’ from a set of armor in the late Edo/Meiji -period revival style. It consists of a pair — one for each side — and is attached to the shoulder area of the torso, acting as a shield to protect the shoulders and upper arms from attacks by arrows and swords. It is crafted using the ‘odoshi’ technique, in which small metal plates are arranged in a single horizontal row and bound together vertically with thread. ●Dimensions Height 43.5cm × Width 36cm Weight 2.2kg (1.1 kg each) ●Condition Overall condition is fairly good. However, there are some minor scratches and scuffs due to age. The leather and gold leaf covering the underside of the wide sleeves have peeled away due to wear and tear over the years.
