A finely crafted Benjarong-style famille noir gaiwan, executed in porcelain and richly decorated in overglaze enamels with gilded accents. The exterior is set against a deep black (famille noir) ground, serving as a dramatic backdrop for densely arranged polychrome motifs in the characteristic Benjarong palette of five principal colors. Intricate floral scrolls and stylized vegetal arabesques unfold across the surface in a continuous, highly ornamental composition, heightened by delicate gold detailing that emphasizes outlines and rhythmic patterning. The set comprises of two elements - the bowl and the domed lid - each harmoniously integrated within the overall decorative scheme. The interior is typically left in a contrasting pale glaze, enhancing both visual clarity and functional use in tea preparation. This type of gaiwan reflects a cross-cultural aesthetic: Chinese porcelain techniques and form combined with the opulent, courtly taste of Thai Benjarong ware, historically produced for elite consumption. Elegant and visually striking, the piece functions both as a refined tea utensil and as a decorative object, embodying the synthesis of Southeast Asian and Chinese ceramic traditions. Benjarong (from Thai, derived from Pali/Sanskrit pañcaranga) is a luxury Thai ceramic tradition, historically produced in China (primarily in Jingdezhen) for the Siamese court (Ayutthaya, later Bangkok). It is characterized by dense, gilded enamel decoration in vivid, saturated colors. 100 ml. The gaiwan was never restored in any capacity, nor did it carry any significant wear to the enamel.
