Item Description This is a hand-crafted ceramic lidded jar by Japanese potter 山内達雄 Yamauchi Tatsuo, made using the neriage (marbled clay) technique. The globular body is formed from multiple layers of differently coloured clays — grey, white, red, and dark brown — which have been kneaded and thrown together to produce the characteristic flowing, wave-like patterns that swirl across the entire surface. Scattered throughout the marbled ground are bold spots of red and cobalt blue, adding vivid accents to the otherwise fluid, organic patterning. The domed lid is surmounted by a sculptural lotus-flower finial in dark brown and red glaze, with small perforations visible around its base — a refined decorative touch that echoes traditional Japanese ceramic aesthetics. At the join between lid and body, two small gold-leaf (kin-hakuochi) accent patches have been applied, lending a subtle luxurious detail to the piece. The interior of the bowl section is glazed in a muted grey-green, revealing the unglazed dark stoneware clay at the rim. The foot ring is unglazed, exposing the raw clay body and showing the neriage patterning extending to the very base of the vessel.
