Yasuhiro Yasuda – “Shiyusai Henko” (Purple Glazed Flattened Vase)
A Sculptural Masterpiece of Contemporary Kyoto Ceramics
This exceptional work is a “Shiyusai Henko” (紫釉彩扁壺) by Yasuhiro Yasuda (1926–2011), one of the most celebrated ceramic artists of modern Kyoto.
Born in Kyoto in 1926, Yasuda devoted his life to exploring the expressive possibilities of ceramic glazes. He became internationally recognized for his innovative use of deep purples, reds and dramatic kiln transformations, creating works that blur the boundaries between traditional Kyoto ware and contemporary sculpture.
This piece is a superb example of his mature style.
The entire surface is covered with a rich purple glaze, over which white kiln effects drift naturally like mist across a mountain landscape. The rugged, stone-like texture catches the light beautifully, revealing endless variations in color and depth. Depending on the viewing angle, the vessel appears at times powerful and monumental, and at others serene and poetic.
The form is equally striking.
“Henko” refers to a traditional flattened vessel, but Yasuda transformed this classical shape into something entirely modern. The softly distorted outline, asymmetrical balance and sculptural volume create a powerful presence that transcends its practical use as a flower vase.
This is not merely a vessel.
It is a ceramic sculpture that embodies the spirit of postwar Japanese art.
Yasuhiro Yasuda received numerous prestigious awards during his career, including:
* Nitten Special Selection Prize
* Japan Ceramic Society Award
* Minister of Education Award at the Japan Contemporary Arts & Crafts Exhibition
He also served as a councillor of the Nitten Exhibition and as an honorary member of the Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Association.
His major works are housed in museums and important collections throughout Japan, including the Shiga Museum of Art.
This work comes complete with:
* Original signed wooden box (tomobako)
* Original leaflet
* Artist's impressed signature on the base
Weight:
- Vase: approx. 2,000 g
- With original wooden box (tomobako): approx. 2,500 g
- Total shipping weight: approx. 3,000 g
The combination of the original box, leaflet and excellent condition makes this piece particularly desirable for collectors of modern Japanese ceramics.
The mysterious beauty of the purple glaze, the bold sculptural form, and the unmistakable artistic vision of Yasuhiro Yasuda come together in this remarkable work.
A rare opportunity to acquire a museum-quality piece by one of Kyoto's great ceramic masters.
