Taíno Jadeite Idol – Dominican Republic – 10th to 15th Century AD
Finely carved Taíno jadeite idol depicting a standing anthropomorphic figure with pronounced facial features, powerful legs, and arms folded across the chest. The sculpture displays the characteristic stylized proportions and spiritual symbolism associated with the Taíno peoples of the Greater Antilles, where such figures served as embodiments of ancestral beings, protective spirits, or revered zemís. The rich green jadeite, combined with the ancient surface wear and careful workmanship, creates a striking representation of Caribbean pre-Columbian lapidary art.
Jadeite carvings occupied a special place within Taíno ceremonial and elite contexts due to the rarity and prestige of the material. The figure’s compact proportions, expressive face, and robust stance reflect the distinctive artistic language of the Late Taíno period. Well-preserved jadeite idols are significantly rarer than stone examples and are highly sought after by collectors of Caribbean and pre-Columbian art.
