A remarkable Viking Age bronze pendant in the form of a stylized wolf tooth.
The pendant is cast in a distinctive elongated lanceolate form and decorated on the obverse with rows of finely executed geometric triangular motifs, creating a striking visual effect. The reverse is plain, indicating that the piece was intended to be displayed from one side when worn. A suspension terminal survives at the top, allowing the pendant to be attached to a chain, dress ornament, or personal adornment assemblage.
Such pendants are associated with the eastern Viking world, where symbolic representations of wolf teeth, bear claws, and other animal-derived amulets were worn as protective talismans. Rather than using actual animal teeth, craftsmen produced durable bronze versions that retained the symbolic power and status associated with the wolf—an animal highly respected in Norse and steppe traditions alike.
Artifacts of this type reflect the rich cultural exchange that characterized the eastern Viking sphere during the 9th–11th centuries AD.
