一件木质雕塑 - Ashanti - 迦納 (沒有保留價)

This Ashanti doll from the Kumasi region is a so-called fertility or Akua'ba doll, belonging to the cultural context of Akan societies. Within Ashanti tradition, such figures were worn and cared for by women to promote fertility, the birth of healthy children, and the well-being of the family. They also embody central notions of beauty, social identity, and moral perfection. Characteristic is the large, disc-shaped, flattened head, which dominates the composition. Within Akan aesthetics, the high forehead is considered an expression of intelligence, dignity, and physical beauty. Below it lies a long, flat-modeled nose and an alert, forward-facing gaze, which lends the figure a remarkable presence despite its simplified form. Fine incisions on the back of the head are reminiscent of scarification or hair ornaments and allude to cultural concepts of attractiveness and belonging. The long, grooved neck emphasizes the figure's vertical elegance. The outstretched arms without sculpted hands and the pointed, protruding breasts follow a deliberately stylized formal language that expresses idealization rather than individuality. The sculpted navel alludes to fertility and lineage. The absence of legs in favor of a pedestal-like base draws attention to the figure's symbolic function. The glossy patina and slight signs of wear testify to age, handling, and ritual veneration. Literature (selection) Akua'ba: Asante Fertility Dolls, Gainesville 1998. Akan Weights and the Gold Trade, London 1980. The Golden Stool: Regalia of the Asantehene, New York 1987. Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa, Washington D.C. 1989. L’Art africain, Paris 1988. Africa Explores: 20th Century African Art, New York 1991. MAZ14159
