一件木质雕塑 - Bété. - 象牙海岸

This Bété figure from the Guibéroua region in west-central Ivory Coast embodies the powerful imagery characteristic of Bété sculpture traditions. In contrast to the more idealized and elegant figures of neighboring Baule or Guro groups, Bété sculptures often emphasize physical strength, steadfastness, and spiritual efficacy. They served as protective figures, ancestral representations, or as bearers of ritual power within local religious practices. The standing figure is defined by exceptionally powerful limbs, which lend it a monumental presence. The outward-angled arms with the palms facing downward create a gesture of controlled authority and vigilance. The hairstyle consists of a central crest from which flat, arched sections of hair spread out. The frontal gaze and closed mouth convey both tranquility and determination. The powerful neck is particularly striking, articulated by two diagonal, braided-looking decorative bands. This ornamentation is repeated on the lower abdomen, creating a formal connection between the head and body. The small, forward-facing chest contrasts with the figure's massive physique. The abdomen is covered with a complex diamond pattern, within which small raised crosses appear—a motif that may allude to protective symbolism or social markers. The broad, meticulously crafted feet lend the figure additional stability. The glossy patina and minimal signs of wear attest to long use and good preservation.
