賣家描述
This Baule figurine from the Bouaké region in central Ivory Coast belongs to the tradition of figurative representations that, within Baule society, served as vehicles of spiritual presence, personal protective powers, or as representations of idealized human beings. Baule art is characterized by the combination of harmonious proportions, controlled expressiveness, and an aesthetic that understands external beauty as a reflection of inner order.
The standing figure presents itself in an unusually reduced, yet compelling, formal language. Its hands rest on its lower abdomen, creating a posture of concentrated focus. The frontal gaze lends the figure a serene authority, while the white-highlighted eyeballs immediately draw the viewer's attention to the face. The closed lips are pigmented red, providing a striking splash of color within the otherwise dark appearance.
The black pigmentation of the body reinforces the solidity of the form and may indicate ritualistic modifications or a deliberate emphasis on spiritual efficacy. The white fingernails complement the carefully coordinated color scheme. The short hairstyle reflects a classic Baule ideal of understated elegance. The blue trousers are noteworthy, lending the figure an individual character and possibly indicating a later adaptation to contemporary lifestyles.
The small base securely anchors the figure in the space. Wear marks and minor imperfections document a long history of use and testify to the object's cultic value.
