Chinese Export Blue and White, Iron-Red and Gilt Porcelain Plate Kangxi Period (1662–1722) An elegant Chinese Export porcelain plate dating to the Kangxi period (1662–1722), beautifully decorated in the celebrated Chinese Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red enamels and gilt highlights. The plate is finely painted with peonies, chrysanthemum blossoms and scrolling floral sprays surrounding a delicately composed central medallion. The vibrant cobalt blue, brilliant iron-red enamels and carefully applied gilding create a striking contrast, demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship achieved by the Jingdezhen kilns during the Kangxi period. Chinese Imari porcelain was produced in China primarily for the European export market and became one of the most fashionable luxury wares of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Inspired by Japanese Imari porcelain while retaining a distinctly Chinese artistic style, these richly decorated pieces were highly sought after by aristocratic households and wealthy merchants throughout Europe. Diameter: 27.6 cm. Condition The plate has an old visible historic restoration, including a repaired break that can be seen with the naked eye. The restoration has been clearly illustrated in the accompanying photographs. There is also minor age-related wear and firing imperfections consistent with a piece of more than 300 years in age. Despite the restoration, the plate displays beautifully, retaining its vibrant enamels, strong cobalt blue decoration and elegant composition. It remains an attractive and highly collectible example of early eighteenth-century Chinese Export porcelain.
