This is a vase by Tatsuzo Shimaoka.
It is a striking vase featuring a color palette that transitions from deep red to pink.
The piece utilizes the "rope inlay" (*nawa-zogan*) technique.
What is the rope inlay technique?
This is a form of inlay work in which a rope-like pattern is created, and clay of a different color is inlaid into the impressions.
This technique was developed by Tatsuzo Shimaoka, a Living National Treasure known for his "Jomon-style inlay" work.
Tatsuzo Shimaoka (October 27, 1919 – December 11, 2007)
He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1996.
Shimaoka studied under Shoji Hamada, who was also a Living National Treasure.
While inheriting Hamada's style, he was highly acclaimed for his own unique artistic identity.
Both the master and the apprentice were designated as Living National Treasures.
The item is in near-mint condition.
Comes with a *tomobako* (signed wooden storage box).
