This male figure, with its realistic face, belongs stylistically to the category of clan ancestors. Housed in the House of Men, this sculpture played a vital role in the initiation of young men, who slept beside it in order to absorb its virility [1]. Its arched lower jaw is surmounted by a long, curved nose, a symbol of vigour, whilst the intensity of its gaze lends it its commanding presence. As a testament to the history and culture of the Sepik peoples, this sculpture plays a major role in the transmission of knowledge and cultural values between Papuan generations.
