Shigaraki Ware - Rakusai Takahashi - Chawan - 陶瓷 - 信楽茶碗
Here’s a clear and informative English explanation about the Shigaraki ware vase described as “Shigaraki Kiln Sansai Sakuhin” , including what Shigaraki ware and Sansai mean and why such pieces are valued:
Shigaraki Ware (Shigaraki-yaki)
Shigaraki ware is one of Japan’s most historic ceramic traditions, made in the Shigaraki area of Shiga Prefecture. It is recognized as part of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns — ceramic centers with continuous production dating back many centuries. The tradition began over 1,200 years ago and developed fully by the 13th–14th centuries. Shigaraki ware was later officially designated as a Traditional Japanese Craft due to its enduring cultural and artistic value.
What defines Shigaraki ware is its unique local clay and the effects of the kiln firing:
The clay is iron-rich and coarse, which results in pottery with a distinctive warm coloration and earthy texture after firing.
During wood or high-temperature firing, the surface develops natural kiln variation (“fire color”), including reddish brown, warm tones, and subtle natural glazes caused by ash and minerals.
The result is pottery that embraces natural variation and wabi-sabi aesthetics — beauty in imperfection and organic surface change.
Shigaraki vessels are often robust and practical, yet their surface texture and coloration give them a distinctive artistic character that appeals to collectors and interior designers alike.
