Koteka (Penis Gourd) – Lani People, Highlands, West Papua
An authentic Koteka (penis gourd) from the Lani people of the Central Highlands of West Papua.
The koteka is one of the most distinctive elements of traditional male attire in the Papuan Highlands. Fashioned from a carefully cultivated bottle gourd, it was worn daily by adult men and secured with natural fiber cords around the waist and chest. The size and shape of the koteka varied between regions and reflected local customs and cultural identity.
Among the Lani, the koteka was an essential part of traditional dress and was worn during everyday activities, ceremonial gatherings, dances, and important community events. Beyond its practical function, it symbolized cultural identity, adulthood, and adherence to ancestral traditions.
This example displays an attractive aged patina and signs of traditional use, making it an appealing ethnographic artifact. Authentic Lani kotekas collected before the widespread cultural changes of the late twentieth century have become increasingly difficult to obtain.
A fine and increasingly scarce object for collectors of Oceanic tribal art and ethnographic material.
