Title: Kutani Ware Flower Vase — Mokubei-Style Decoration with Gold Kinsai, Size 8 (approx. 24 cm)
This is a Kutani ware (Kutani-yaki) porcelain flower vase produced by the Eiho kiln, decorated in the classic Mokubei style with gold kinsai accents. It is a fine example of the richly painted, colorful overglaze work for which Kutani ware is celebrated worldwide.
About the Tradition
Kutani ware is one of Japan's most famous colored-porcelain traditions, produced in Ishikawa Prefecture and known internationally as "Japan Kutani." Its defining feature is the bold, decorative overglaze painting known as the Kutani five colors (red, blue/green, yellow, purple, and deep blue), applied over a white porcelain body. Kutani ware has long been prized by collectors in Europe and North America for its vivid palette and painterly detail.
About the Style — Mokubei
The Mokubei style is one of the historic Kutani decorative modes, named after the Kyoto literati painter and potter who helped revive Kutani production in the early 19th century. It is characterized by a ground of iron red covering the surface, over which Chinese-inspired figures and motifs are painted in fine detail using the five colors. The style carries a warm, scholarly, and distinctly classical atmosphere.
About the Technique — Gold Kinsai
Kinsai is the application of gold over the glaze, used here to highlight and frame the painted decoration. The gold catches the light against the red ground, adding depth, richness, and a sense of luxury that is highly characteristic of decorative Kutani work.
Form and Size
This is a "size 8" (hachi-go) vase, standing approximately 24 cm tall — a generous, display-worthy scale suitable as a centerpiece. The full form provides an ample canvas for the all-over painted decoration, making the piece as much a decorative work of art as a functional flower vessel.
Condition
[Describe condition honestly here — e.g. In good overall condition with no chips or cracks. Minor age-appropriate wear. Please review all photos, which form part of the description.]
Appeal
As a flower vase (hanaire), it is well suited to ikebana, arrangements, or interior display, and will appeal to collectors of Japanese porcelain and Kutani ware, as well as anyone drawn to richly decorated traditional Japanese ceramics.
