The woodcarving is extremely beautiful and very high quality.

Saint George, also called the Victorious, is one of the most revered saints and martyrs in the Christian faith.
The birthplace of the Holy Great Martyr George is Cappadocia. According to various sources, the saint's parents were called Gerontius and Polychronia. His father was a pagan Persian warrior and his mother a Christian who raised her son in Christian piety.
Saint Great Martyr George lived during the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Even when he was a child, his father fell seriously ill and died. His mother, who had a large estate in Palestine, returned to her homeland after the death of her husband.
The historical path of St. George
Young George joined the army. Shortly after, the emperor noticed the good qualities of Saint George and made him a member of the state council. At that time there were great persecutions against Christians. After his mother died, Saint George inherited her estate. Because he was a worshiper of Christ, he freed the slaves, gave away his property and wealth. He began to prepare to defend the Christian faith and perform a feat in the name of Jesus Christ.
He appeared at the emperor's palace in Nicodemia and declared his will boldly in front of everyone. In vain he was advised by Diocletian to renounce Christ. Because of his unshakable faith, he was thrown into prison and subjected to all kinds of torture. Only strong faith helped St. George stoically bears all the tortures. The Lord God himself, Jesus Christ healed his wounds with a touch of his hand.
Many people, seeing the firmness of George and his devotion to Christ, also believed and were baptized. The emperor's wife, Alexandra, was one of them. Therefore Diocletian ordered the two to be put to the sword. And so on April 23, 306, in the city of Lith, Palestine, George was beheaded and completed his confession of Christ with dignity, for which he received the imperishable crown of faith.
