A striking medium-sized bronze flower vase produced in the celebrated Takaoka dōki (高岡銅器) tradition, bearing the maker's mark of 勝峰 Shōhō and acquired from the renowned Ōhora Dōkiten workshop. The vase is distinguished by a captivating surface treatment in deep navy-blue to slate-grey marble patterning, over which a delicate overall gilding has been applied. This interplay of dark marbled ground and gold highlights creates a dynamic visual effect: as light strikes the surface from different angles, the colours shift and shimmer, conjuring the mysterious depths of the open sea. The overall silhouette is classical and elegant, well-proportioned for displaying cut flowers or standing alone as an interior accent object, where its quiet beauty anchors a room with understated sophistication.
Takaoka, located in Toyama Prefecture, has been Japan's foremost centre of copper and bronze casting for over 400 years, tracing its origins to the early Edo period when the Kaga domain lord Maeda Toshinaga invited master casters to the region. Today Takaoka accounts for the vast majority of Japan's decorative bronze production, and its craftsmen are celebrated for their mastery of casting, chasing, patination, and surface colouring techniques. The distinctive marbled polychrome patina seen on this vase is achieved through precise chemical treatment and hand-finishing, skills passed down through generations of Takaoka artisans.
