This hexagonal incense burner is handcrafted by renowned Kutani potter Yōzan (洋山), an elegant decorative piece designed for Japanese tea and incense ceremony display.
Boasting a 400-year heritage, Kutani Ware (九谷焼) is a prestigious Japanese painted porcelain craft, celebrated for its rich glaze tones, meticulous hand-painted details and elaborate gilded ornamentation. The exclusive aotetsu dot ground gilding technique represents a high-grade classic Kutani craft, widely recognized and valued by collectors.
Crafted in a standard hexagonal form with three sturdy tripod feet, the censer features balanced, elegant proportions. The entire vessel is covered in fine, uniform blue-green aotetsu speckled glaze. All six sides are exquisitely hand-painted with gilded chrysanthemum and scrolling vine motifs. The layered floral patterns are well-composed, symbolizing nobility and auspiciousness, embodying a refined and luxurious oriental aesthetic.
It is paired with a matching hexagonal lid with openwork smoke vents, crowned with a fully sculpted, well-defined beast finial. The rim and body edges are trimmed with delicate gilded keyfret patterns. Fully hand-coloured, multi-layer gilded and repeatedly high-temperature fired, the piece presents a smooth, lustrous glaze with full, vivid gilding, showcasing the premium craftsmanship of Showa-era Kutani ceramic art.
This is an original handcrafted work by master Kutani artisan Yōzan (洋山). The base bears a handwritten red ink signature “Kutani Yōzan (九谷 洋山)”, a personal artist mark rather than a generic kiln stamp. The item is fully complete with its original paulownia box and fukusa cloth.
Faint natural oxidation and minor age-related wear are present from long-term storage. The aotetsu glaze, gilded patterns and beast finial remain perfectly intact. Free from dents, chips, cracks and restorations. Overall condition is excellent.
