A Japanese four-panel byōbu depicting a ceremonial jinmaku, the traditional military field curtain used to demarcate a commander’s headquarters. Jinmaku served both as functional battlefield screens and as symbols of authority and clan identity. Suspended from a thick braided cord with evenly spaced ties, the curtain is articulated by horizontal bands in black and grey, suggesting the folds and drapery of the textile. Three circular mokkō family crests (kamon) punctuate the composition. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. --- The byobu is in very good condition.
