Necklace from the Viking Age (8th–11th century AD) An authentic Viking Age necklace made from original elements dated between the 8th and 11th century AD. It represents an exceptional example of Nordic jewellery with symbolic and protective character. Description It consists of two large oval amulets made of silver, three shield-shaped amulets, and two lunulae – the remaining elements are made from other metals used during the Viking Age, such as bronze, billon (a mixture of silver and bronze), and tinned bronze. The transparent glass beads and the red‑orange carnelian beads originate from the Viking Age and are typical for finds from Scandinavian burials. Bronze spirals separate the amulets and beads, forming a characteristic structural element of jewellery from this period. The green beads come from a later period, yet they preserve the historical character of the whole piece. Dating Most elements originate from the 8th–11th century AD, except for the green beads, which are later. Condition Preserved in very good condition for its age. Natural signs of ageing, patina, and minor wear highlight the authenticity of the artefacts. Significance The necklace combines decorative and symbolic functions — shield-shaped amulets and lunulae were worn as protective talismans, and the combination of various metals and stones reflects the high status of its owner in Viking culture. Museum Value & Authentication This necklace is a museum‑grade artefact of significant historical value. It comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by an expert in Early Medieval studies, who is also a trained anthropologist. Provenance The piece originates from a private collection in New York, United States, acquired in 2026 from a private collector F.B. The individual components of the necklace were previously sourced from an auction in Germany, originating from a collection dating back to 1970s. Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller . No further tests, such as an analysis of metals(XRF-test) have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece. The seller guarantees that he is entitled to ship this lot. The seller will take care that any necessary permits will be arranged. The seller will inform the buyer about this if this takes more than a few days
